But why do we want to bind Fenrir ?

Fenrir is a wolf raised by the Aesir gods themselves who grew up at an astonishingly fast pace. He is so gigantic that only Tyr, god of war, has the courage to feed him. The Aesirs decide then to chain him in order to keep him under control and prevent him from wreaking havoc throughout the Nine Worlds… Their first two attempts were unsuccessful… While the cunning gods convinced Fenrir that it was only a game, a test of his strength, he broke through the fetters easily. For their third attempt, the gods had the dwarves forge the strongest chain ever built, which nevertheless gave the appearance of being very light and even soft to the touch. When the gods presented Fenrir with this third fetter, he became suspicious, and he refused to be bound with it unless one of the gods would stick their hand in his mouth as a pledge of good faith. Only Tyr was brave enough to do this, knowing that it would mean the loss of his hand. And, sure enough, when Fenrir found himself unable to break free of his bonds, he ripped Tyr’s hand from its arm.

Yggdrasil Chronicles, how to survive the prophetic Ragnarok?

Do you want to know more about the scenari of the book of sagas presented in Yggdrasil Chronicles? You are on the right page. The Book of Sagas “which sings the twilight of the Gods” takes you into the heart of Norse mythology where you will have to fight monsters, take up challenges and finally try to survive the ultimate Ragnarok! The Ragnarok campaign in the game consists in 6 acts: The assassination of Baldr, the Fimbulvert, the Managarms, the apparatus of Naglfar, the fall of the Bifrost, The final battle on the plain of Vigrid…

Ragnarok, in mythology

A prophecy says that one day, when Fenrir the giant wolf chained by Odin will be released, the Giants and the Gods will fight each other in a final battle. This will lead to the end of the worlds as we know but also to a renewal. This day will be named Ragnarök or the Twilight of the Gods… Unlike the game, the Norse prophecy cannot be avoided! The Gods and Giants, they all know that this day will come when they will kill each other. This way their lifetime goal is to push back this moment as much as possible without taking too much risks. Indeed, the Norse Gods are not immortal! So in their relentless battle against the Giants of the lower worlds of the Yggdrasil, they mostly repel them, fearing for their lives. But the forces of evil are on the march and the final battle is coming anyway…

• The death of Baldr (Saga 1)

The Ragnarok will begin with the murder of Balder… Son of Odin and Frigg, god of Love and Light, he is loved by all! One day he starts having nightmares and sees himself dying so he tells his parents. Not knowing what to do, Odin looks for the ghost of a giant clairvoyant woman living in Hel’s domain. She tells him that Balder is doomed and even Odin cannot help it. Frigg does not accept his son’s fate… She makes a long list of all the harmful and dangerous things and visits the Nine Worlds to make each being and each thing swear to never hurt Balder. Fire, water, stones, metals, plants, birds and diseases bend to his will. In order to test Balder’s invulnerability, the gods find a new funny game: throwing  at him all sorts of things and see them spinning around safely. But Loki is jealous of Balder… Dressed up like an old woman he questions Frigg about this new invulnerability and she recognizes that, perhaps, a small plant in the West of Valhalla has not made the promise: “An insignificant sprig of mistletoe”. Full of hatred, Loki finds this plant and makes an arrow with it. He joins the gods still playing, asks Hoder the blind brother of Balder if he wants to play too and offers him the arrow of mistletoe… He guides the hand of the blind and the arrow pierces the heart of Balder who falls… Dead.

• The Managarms (Saga 3)

The gods finally find out Loki’s trickery and punish him for the death of Baldr. They transform Vali, Loki’s son, into a wolf to devour Narve, his other son. Once dead, Narve’s guts are transformed into a rope so that Thor can tie Loki to a rock in a cave with it. The Gods, not only content for having caught Loki, charge a serpent to indefinitely spit its venom on the traitor’s face in order to inflict him horrible suffering. But Loki ends up freeing himself after years of chain and takes his revenge launching the final war against the Gods. He gathers the demons, the Giants and his own children: the dreadful serpent Jormungandr, Hel the goddess of the world of the dead and the giant wolf Fenrir. Fenrir breaks his chains and this is the beginning of the prophecy, the Ragnarok begins. Fenrir mates with an old giantess in a remote forest in the East who gives birth to a litter of monstrous wolves. One, Skoll, is constantly chasing the Sun while his brother Hati is chasing the Moon. They both end up devouring the stars which completely disappear… The consequences are very serious: the world is deprived of the clear rays of the Sun and a terrible winter starts dominating the world.

• The Fimbulvert (Saga 2) or the Great Winter

Snow is covering all points of the horizon. In these very difficult living conditions wars break out in all places, between all men, even between brothers, between parents and children. This winter lasts three years and it is terrible. The Ases and the mortals are then warned of the final battle of the Ragnarök by Heimdall who blows in his horn Gjallarhorn. The great war is about to begin.

• The departure of the Naglfar (Saga 4)

The Naglfar is a boat made from the nails of the dead. The giant Hrymr leads the Giants to Asgard on it to start the great battle. The Naglfar is carried by enormous waves caused by the very agitated movements of Jormungandr, the enormous serpent in Migard. All the armies of the lower Yggdrasil worlds are at the gates of Asgard.

• The Bifrost’s fall (Saga 5)

The violence caused by this gathering of monsters shatters the sky in two and when the horses of the Sons of Fire run over the Bifrost, which connects the earth to the domain of the gods, the rainbow bridge ignites and collapses…

• The final battle on the plain of Vigrid (Saga 6)

The battlefield has already been determined, the clashes will take place on the plain of Vigrid in Asgard, extending in front of Valhalla and measuring a thousand miles aside. Odin appears on the battlefield wearing a gold helmet and huge eagle wings, he holds in his left hand his famous lance Gungnir which never misses its target and rides its stallion Sleipnir which flies like a hurricane and place him at the head of his army. The great battle begins, the Ases succumb to the assault of their enemies: Fenrir with his huge mouth swallows Odin at the very beginning of the battle. To avenge him, his son Vidar advances towards Fenrir and skillfully thrusts his sword straight in the heart of Fenrir, killing the giant wolf.

Freyr fights in duel Surt the chief of the fire giants. He cannot resist the force of Surt’s sword and succumbs in this confrontation. Jormungandr emerges from his hiding place in the bottom of the Midgard Ocean and confronts Thor in a spectacular duel. Thor is powerful, he kills the snake using his great hammer with which he grinds the serpent’s skull. But as he moves away from his already dead enemy, at the ninth step, he falls too, poisoned by the enormous amount of venom that the giant snake has spit in the air and in the sea…

Loki is looking for his old enemy Heimdall. He finds, fights and kills him but quickly succumbs to the blows and injuries made by his opponent. Tyr who once lost his right hand, sliced by Fenrir’s bite to allow the other gods to tie him up, searches for this mutilating opponent in the battlefield but Fenrir is already dead. Then, hearing the frightening howls of Garm the guardian dog of the entrance to Hell, he decides to fight him. Tyr, with his left hand, sticks his sword in his heart and kills him but quickly he also succumb to the terrible bites inflicted during the fight…

Few living things remain alive at the end of the final battle… And finally, these  surviving humans, animals or plants are wiped out by the fire launched from all sides by the flame sword of the fire giant Surt. The mountains collapse and all the seas and rivers overflow covering all the surfaces of the worlds, including the final battlefield of the gods… So we hope that you will be a little luckier than the Norse gods and that you will succeed to elude the Ragnarok prophecy.

But who is this Utgardloki?

Utgardloki is one of the most important Ice Giants in Jotunheim. From his fortress in Utgardhall in the province of Utgard, he has always sought to unite the Ice Giants under his authority in order to overthrow Asgard but has failed so far in this area.

One day Thor and Loki go to Jotunheim. From the top of his Fortress, Utgardloki challenged Thor to complete 3 tasks:
• defeat an old lady,
• raise the paw of a cat,
• drink the mead horn to the last drop.

But Thor could not achieve any of them. As Great Master of the Illusion, Utgardloki had rigged the trials. No old lady but Elli, the personnification of old age that no one can beat. No Paw of cat but but the tail of Iormungand, the sea serpent of Midgard. And a mead horn directly connected with the ocean that Thor could not empty.

Yggdrasil Chronicles, an invitation to learn more about Norse mythology

Would you like to learn a bit more about the universe of Yggdrasil Chronicles? Today we bring you at the heart of its theme, in the Norse mythology. To start discovering the world of Thor and Odin you would need to become familiar with a North Germanic language with words, syllables and letters that we are not used to dealing with. Svartalfheim is a good example. It’s a whole lexicon to understand, a detailed world to discover. All artifacts, creatures, places have their own names and stories. For example Odin rides his eight-legged horse named Sleipnir, he is armed with his spear Gungnir and when he is in his palace in Valhalla, two ravens Hugin and Munin whisper in his ear what they saw of the nine worlds while two wolves, Geri and Freki, remain at his feet …

The Nine Worlds

Cédric Lefebvre, author of the game, tried to stick as much as possible to the legends and myths of the Norse mythology which all take place around the Yggdrasil, the cosmic tree carrying the nine worlds: Ásgard, Vanaheim, Alfheim, Midgard, Nidavellir, Jötunheim, Svartalfheim, Muspellheim, Niflheim. You can find other names or distribution of the worlds on the Yggdrasil as the writings vary from one to another. Like many ancient mythologies, there are no “real truths” because everything was told orally for centuries. Plus, Christianity also altered the stories, imposing its vision of good and evil. It was not until 1300 that we began to transcribe these tales on paper with the famous book Edda written by Snorri Sturluson who, by the way, was a Christian. Let’s go back to our Yggdrasil and its nine worlds.

Asgard is the land of the Ases (or Aesir) of the warrior and sovereign gods represented by Odin the father-of-all. Odin is a main figure in Norse mythology.

He and his brothers created Midgard – our world, the humans’ one – with the corpse of Ymir, the original giant, after a deadly battle. The Earth is his flesh, the Ocean his blood. Ocean in which Jormungandr lives, a monstrous snake whose gigantic tail completely encircles the kingdom. A rainbow bridge, the Bifrost, connects these two worlds and provides the gods but also some humans a mean to travel between.

In Norse mythology there is another type of gods, the Vanes (or Vanir) who live in Vanaheim. They are the gods of fertility, fecundity, wisdom and precognition. They waged war with the Ases for a long time which ended in a truce sealed by an exchange of Gods which brought the Vanes Njörd, Freyr and Freyja to Asgard.

Several other types of living beings inhabit the Yggdrasil. The Alfar, bright Elves, live in Alfheim and provide spiritual helps and advices to the mortals. They are said to be even brighter than the sun.

Unlike the Alfar, the Swartalfar are dark Elves, even darker than the darkest nights. They live in Swartalfheim, home of night creatures.

The dwarves live in Nidavellir. They have magical powers and work metal better than anyone. They create powerful and magical weapons for the Gods, among others.

Three worlds stand in the roots of the Yggdrasil, they are home to the most terrible creatures. Jotunheim, the world left by Odin to the Jotuns, the Giants, during Creation is one of them. These Giants are constantly at war, they love fighting and stealing. Masters of cheating and mockery, they are the main enemies of the Ases even though some of them reside in Asgard like Loki.

There is also Muspelheim, the world of flames where the Fire Giants reside, the best known and most dangerous of them is Surt…

Nilfheim, the “world of the dead” is the last world. The deceased, those who died of old age or disease, those who broke their oaths and promises, in other words all those who did not die as heroes go in this world led by the goddess Hel.

The Gods

In Yggdrasil Chronicles, you play a god Ase or Vane who have their own powers and skills. You can choose them for their abilities or for the stories and values they embody.

Freya is a Vane goddess who has been sent to Asgard, the kingdom of the Ases, at the end of the war between these two divine folks. She is the most beautiful and noblest of the Goddesses. She is dressed in bird feathers which allow her to change into a hawk. She owns a chariot pulled by two cats which respectively represent tenderness and carnal warmth. Powerful goddess she reveals the secret of Seidr, witchcraft, to Odin giving him the power to predict the future, to control life and death, love and intelligence.

Freyr is Freya’s brother, the most glorious of the Ases in spite of his Vanes origins. He has a power over the rain and the sunshine, he is the god of prosperity. He owns the Skidbladnir drakkar capable of sailing both on land and sea. This gigantic boat can transport all the Gods and the army of Asgard but when Freyr does not need it anymore, he can fold it very small so that he can put it in his pocket.

Heimdall is the keeper of the Bifrost, the Asgard’s sentry. He is aware of every little thing. He sleeps less than a bird, sees over an hundred miles by day as by night and his hearing acuity enables him to hear the grass and wool of sheep growing. He rides Gulltopp, a golden horse. It is said that when the Ragnarok comes, he will blow into the Gjallarhorn horn to warn the Asgardians and the Humans of the beginning of the final battle against the Giants.

Thor is Odin’s son. He is a mighty warrior, god of combat and martial arts, he is the strongest of Ases and men. He is armed with Mjollnir, a magic hammer made by the dwarves whose characteristic is to always return in the hands of its owner when it is thrown. In addition to his colossal strength, he is the god of thunderstorms and can unleash lightnings. To move, he owns a chariot pulled by two goats Tanngnjost and Tanngrisnit.

Frigg is Odin’s wife. With Freya she is one of the noblest goddesses of Asgard. Goddess of love, she has an extraordinary power of foreknowledge and knows the destiny of each individual without ever revealing it to them. Her magic also makes her a goddess associated with healing? Often called when the sick or wounded ones approach death, she makes the last journey sweeter and their passage into the other world more peaceful.

Odin reigns over Asgard and resides in Valhalla in which the dead heroes and the Valkyries dwell. He is the God of war and death but also of poetry and wisdom. He is armed with Gungnir a powerful spear that can cut everything. He rides Sleipner his horse with eight legs which can run faster than the wind, over the seas and the oceans. He is accompanied by two crows, Huginn and Munin which represent Thought and Memory and serve as spies and scouts.

Tyr is also a God of war, he is the one who showed the path to Odin so that he can become himself a God of war. He is the boldest of the Gods, inspiring courage and heroism in battles. He is also the God of justice, in a diplomatic way, he is the guarantor of treaties, pacts and he leads the assemblies.

All these Gods have a role to play in the Ragnarok to come… Open the book of sagas and try to survive the Ragnarok. If you want to know more about the tales and legens you will be playing in Yggdrasil Chronicles, we invite you to read the following article:
