Hel et Jormungand

Comme Fenrir, Hel et Jormungand sont les enfants de Loki et de la géante Angrboda. Le sort que leur réserve Odin est pourtant bien différent.

 

Odin précipite Hel dans le Nilfheim, monde ténébreux et glacé, et lui donne pouvoir sur les neuf mondes afin qu’elle accueille ceux qui lui sont envoyés, c’est à dire les hommes morts de vieillesse ou de maladie. Dans son royaume, Hel possède de vastes résidences où elle cache les morts.

 

Là, elle construit le Naglfar, un navire fait des rognures d’ongle des morts, qui se détachera au soir du Ragnarök et, conduit par Loki, mènera les Géants de Givre au combat.

 

Sinistre et effroyable, Hel est aisément reconnaissable à sa peau, pour moitié de couleur noire, pour moitié de couleur naturelle. Il est écrit que son assiette se nomme « Faim », son couteau « Famine », son lit « Éclatant Malheur » et le seuil de sa porte « Perfidie ».

 

Jormungand, le Serpent de Midgard, quant à lui, est jeté dans la profonde mer qui entoure Midgard. Il y grandit tant que bientôt il fait le tour des terres et se mord la queue. Son ennemi est le Dieu Thor qu’il rencontre à trois reprises :

– lors du défi d’Utgardloki : Thor doit soulever un chat mais malgré ses efforts, il ne parvient à lui faire décoller qu’une seule patte du sol. Utgardloki révèle alors que le chat n’est autre que le Serpent de Midgard.

 

– lors d’une partie de pêche avec le géant Hymir : malgré les mises en garde du géant, Thor part loin au large. Rapidement le Serpent de Midgard mord à l’hameçon. Réagissant aux mouvements véhéments du serpent, Thor s’arc-boute et voit bientôt ses pieds passer à travers le bateau. Prenant appui sur le fond de la mer, Thor tire Jormungand jusqu’au plat-bord et le foudroie du regard. En retour, ce dernier lui crache son venin. Mais au moment où Thor saisit son marteau, Hymir, pris de frayeur, tranche la ligne, permettant au serpent de s’échapper.

 

– Au Ragnarök, Jormungand est tué par Thor qui fait encore neuf pas avant de tomber mort à terre en raison du venin que le serpent a craché sur lui.

Hel and Jormungand


Like Fenrir, Hel and Jormungand are Loki’s and Angrboda’s children. However their fate will be quite different.

Odin throws Hel into Niflheim, a dark and cold world, and bestows upon her authority over nine worlds, in that she must administer board and lodging to those sent to her, and that is those who die of sickness or old age. In this realm Hel has great Mansions with extremely high walls and immense gates, where she hides the dead.

Here she is building Naglfar, a boat made entirely from the fingernails and toenails of the dead. During Ragnarök, itwill be break free from its moorings and will sail to Vígríd, ferrying hordes that will there battle with the gods.

Rather downcast and fierce-looking, Hel is half black and half flesh-coloured. This makes her easily recognizable. Her dish is called « Hunger, » her knife is called « Famine, » the entrance threshold « Stumbling-block, » the bed « Sick-bed ».

Jormungand is tossed into the great ocean that encircles Midgard. The serpent has grown so large that he is able to surround the Earth and grasp his own tail. Jormungand’s arch enemy is the god Thor he encounters three times :

– As one of the tasks set by the Giant Utgardloki, Thor must lift a cat ; he manages to lift it far enough that it lets go of the ground with one of its four feet. When Utgardloki reveals Jormungand as the cat, the lifting is counted as an impressive deed.

– Thor goes fishing with the giant Hymir. Thor demands to go farther into the water, and do so despite Hymir’s warnings. Thor then prepares a strong line and a large hook, which Jörmungandr bits. Thor pulls the serpent from the water, whereupon the two faced one another, Jörmungandr dribbling poison and blood. But as Thor grabbs his hammer to kill the serpent, the giant Hymir cuts the line, leaving the serpent to sink beneath the waves.

– At Ragnarök, Jormungand will come out of the ocean and poison the sky. Thor will kill Jörmungandr and then walk nine paces before falling dead, having been poisoned by the serpent’s venom.

Le dieu aux multiples visages


Il existe parmi les dieux Ases un traitre, « honte de tous les dieux et de tous les hommes ». Fils d’un géant, Loki est splendide d’apparence, mauvais de caractère, très changeant dans son comportement. Plus que les autres êtres, il possède la rouerie et la méchanceté. Il met les dieux constamment dans les plus grandes difficultés mais les tire souvent d’affaire à l’aide de subterfuges.

L’épisode des pommes volées

Ainsi Loki permet à Thjazi d’enlever Idun, déesse Ase, gardienne des pommes merveilleuses qui permettent aux dieux de conserver leur jeunesse. Sous la menace des dieux, il prend ensuite l’allure d’un faucon, la transforme en noix et la ramène en Asgard dans ses serres.


L’anecdote de l’origine de Sleipnir

Alors qu’un maître ouvrier déclare pouvoir construire la muraille d’Asgard en trois mois et exige comme salaire Freyja, le soleil et la lune, Loki lui accorde le droit d’utiliser son prodigieux cheval. Alors que le fort est sur le point d’être terminé à trois jours de l’expiration du délai, Loki est contraint d’empêcher le maître ouvrier de remplir son contrat. Il se transforme alors en jument et distrait l’étalon. De cette rencontre nait Sleipnir, le merveilleux cheval octopode d’Odin.


La tragédie de l’asassinat de Balder

Balder le bon, fils d’Odin, fait un jour un rêve plein de menaces pour sa vie. Frigg reçoit alors les serments du feu, des pierres, de tous les êtres vivants de ne pas blesser Balder. Ceci étant fait, les dieux s’amusent à lui jeter des traits ou lancer des pierres, cela ne lui faisant aucun mal. Loki, rongé par la jalousie, prend l’apparence d’une femme et recueille la confidence de Frigg :

« Il y a une jeune pousse de gui qui m’a semblé trop jeune pour que je recueille son serment. »

Trompant le dieu aveugle Hoder, il l’incite à lancer le rameau de gui sur Balder. Le jeune dieu est alors transpercé par le trait et tombe mort. Lorsque, pour le libérer, Hel, la déesse des morts, demande que tous pleurent le défunt, Loki déguisé en la Géante Thokk refuse, condamnant ainsi Balder à rester en Helheim.

Courroucés, les dieux décident alors de le punir. Ils l’attachent à l’aide des entrailles de son fils puis suspendent au-dessus de lui un serpent dont le venin lui coule sur le visage. Loki endurera ce douloureux châtiment, provoquant des tremblements de terre à chaque soubresaut de douleur jusqu’à l’heure du Ragnarök.

Pour compléter le portrait de ce maîtres de tromperies, il faut ajouter qu’il a procréé avec la Géante Angrboda trois monstrueux enfants : Fenrir, Jormungand et Hel.

The god with multiple faces


There is among the Aesir gods a traitor,  » shame of all the gods and all the men « . Despite being a giant’s son, Loki is a handsome god, bad-tempered and moody. More than the other beings, he knows the trickery and the wickedness. He constantly causes great problems for the gods but often gets them of out of trouble with subterfuges.

The stolen apples episode

So Loki allows Thjazi to kidnap Idun, an Aesir goddess, keeper of the wonderful apples which permit the gods to keep their youth. Under threat of the gods, he turns into a hawk, transforms her into a walnut and brings her back in Asgard in his talons.

The anecdote of Sleipnir’s origin

As a master builder declares he can build the wall of Asgard in three months and demands as a reward Freyja, the sun and the moon, Loki grants him the right to use his prodigious horse. When the fortress is about to be ended three days before the expiry date, Loki is forced to prevent the master builder from fulfilling his promise. He turns then into a mare and distracts the stallion. Sleipnir, the wonderful eight-legged horse of Odin, is born out of this meeting.

Balder’s murder

Balder, the brave god, Odin’s son, has a dream of his own death. To protect him, his mother Frigg makes every object on earth vow never to hurt Balder. After that, the gods indulge in hurling objects at him,which would bounce off without harming him. Loki, the mischief-maker, turns into a woman and hears Frigg saying :

« The mistletoe seemed to me unimportant and nonthreatening to bother asking it to make the vow. »

By deceiving the blind god Hoder, he incites him to throw the spear of mistletoe on Balder. The young god is then pierced by the spear and drops down dead. When, to free him, Hel, the goddess of the deads, demands that everyone mourns the deceased, Loki disguised as the Giant Thokk refuses, so condemning Balder to stay in Helheim.

The angry gods hunt him down and bind him to three rocks. Then they tie a serpent above him, the venom of which dripps onto his face. Loki wriths in pain, thus causing earthquakes. He would free himself, however, in time to attack the gods at Ragnarök

To complete, by the giant Angrboða, Loki is the father of Hel, the wolf Fenrir, and the world serpent Jörmungandr.

Et si on parlait un peu d’Yggdrasil…

L’Yggdrasil : Vous connaissez ? Quelques petits infos pour vous mettre dans l’ambiance


L’arbre-monde est un frêne majestueux dont les branches s’étendent au-dessus du monde entier et dominent le ciel. Ses racines couvrent le mondes des ténèbres et l’immense abîme glacé. Il supporte tous les mondes et abrite toute vie.



Mais il est menacé :

Sous l’arbre, en Nilfheim, le dragon cosmique Nidhögg réside entouré d’innombrables serpents. Jour après jour il ronge par son poison l’arbre que les Nornes bienveillantes soignent grâce à la boue blanche de la source d’Urd.

Quatre cerfs courent dans les branches du frêne et broutent ses rameaux.

Le monde de Hel est une terre glaciale où les flots venimeux ont gelé. Entourée de grilles, elle abrite les hommes après leur trépas.

Le Muspell existe depuis l’origine de l’Univers. Lumineux et très chaud, ce monde n’est que feu et flammes. Y vivent les géants de feu, sous le règne de Surt. Ils partiront bientôt à l’attaque du Midgard et d’Asgard.

Du corps d’Ymir les géants créèrent Midgard, le monde des hommes : de son sang, ils firent la mer et les lacs, de sa chair la terre, de ses os les montagnes, de son crâne le ciel. Cette terre est ronde à sa périphérie, entourée de la très profonde mer. A partir de deux troncs d’arbre trouvés sur le rivage, ils façonnèrent l’homme Ask et la femme Embla qui engendrèrent la race humaine.

Sur ce monde s’appuie le Bifrost, le pont « arc-en-ciel » entre la terre et le ciel. Gardé par Heimdall, il s’écroulera pourtant au soir du Ragnarök.

Do you know Yggdrasil ? Let me introduce the atmosphere to you.

The world-tree is a majestic ash-tree whose branches spread over the whole universe and overlook the sky. His roots cover the dark worlds and the tremendous icy abyss. He bears all the worlds and provides shelter for any life.

But he is in jeopardy :

Under the tree, in Nilfheim, the cosmic dragon Nidhögg lies surrounded by innumerable snakes. Day after day his poison eats into the tree the friendly Nornes nurse thanks to the white mud from the Urd spring.

Four deers roam the branches of the ash tree and graze his buds.

The world of Hel is an icy land where the venomous waves froze. Surrounded by high railings, it provides shelter for the dead men.

Muspell has been existing since the beginnings of the Universe. Bright and very warm, this world is only fire and flames. There live the giants of fire, in the reign of Surt. They will soon leave into the attack of Midgard and Asgard.

From the body of Ymir the Giants created Midgard, the human world : from his blood they made the sea and the lakes, from his flesh the ground, from his bones the mountains, from his skull the sky. This land is round, surrounded by a deep ocean. From two tree trunks found on a beach, they shaped the man called Ask and the woman called Embla who bred the human race.

On this world leans Bifrost, the “rainbow” bridge between the earth and the sky. Guarded by Heimdall, it will collapse in the evening of Ragnarök all the same.
