Dieu de la foudre, pourfendeur de Géants, protecteur des hommes
Fils d’Odin, Thor est le plus fort de tous les Dieux et de tous les hommes. Il habite une halle, appelée Bilskirnir, qui comporte 640 travées. C’est le plus grand bâtiment que l’on connaisse.
Il possède aussi trois objets précieux : le marteau Mjöllnir qui a fracassé le crâne de maints Géants, une ceinture qui double sa force d’Ase, des gants de fer indispensables pour saisir le manche du marteau.
Il possède deux boucs, Tanngniost, celui qui grince des dents, et Tanngrisnir, celui qui montre les dents, qui tirent le char dans lequel il se déplace. Thor peut faire rôtir ses boucs lorsqu’il a faim et, lorsqu’il veut voyager à nouveau, il n’a qu’à bénir les restants des boucs avec son marteau afin que ceux-ci redeviennent vivants et en bonne santé. Cependant, les os ne doivent pas avoir été cassés.
Les défis (truqués) d’Utgard-Loki
Accompagné de Loki, Thor se rend un jour chez le roi des Géants, Utgard-Loki, dans le fort d’Utgard. Celui-ci traite Thor de faible et le met au défi : Thor soulève alors la patte d’un chat, illusion de Jörmungand. Il boit à une corne reliée à l’océan et provoque les marées. Enfin, Thor lutte contre une vieille femme, Elli, personnification de la Vieillesse que personne ne peut battre. Malgré la magie utilisée par le roi des Géants, Thor s’en sort honorablement et quitte Utgard définitivement.
Le vol de Mjöllnir
Les Géants sont les ennemis jurés de Thor. Un matin, à son réveil, Thor constate qu’on lui a dérobé son marteau. Le coupable est Thrym, un roi Géant, qui déclare ne vouloir le rendre qu’en échange de la main de Freyja. Celle-ci refuse évidemment. Thor se déguise alors en mariée et, accompagné de Loki, se présente au banquet du mariage. Malgré quelques doutes, rapidement dissipés par Loki, le Géant est dupé et fait apporter le marteau Mjöllnir pour consacrer la fiancée. Thor s’en empare, jette son déguisement et massacre alors toute l’assemblée.
Au soir du Ragnarök, Thor obtient sa vengeance sur Jörmungand. Cependant, il ne survivra pas au combat. Il ne pourra faire que neuf pas avant de succomber au venin du serpent de Midgard.
God of lightning, sworn enemy of the Giants, protector of mankind
Son of Odin, Thor is the strongest of all the Gods and all the men. He dwells in a hall, called Bilskirnir, which contains 640 rooms. It is the greatest building ever seen.
Thor wields the mountain-crushing hammer, Mjöllnir, wears a power belt that doubles his God’s strenght and the iron gloves useful to handle the powerful hammer.
He owns two goats, Tanngniost, the « teeth-grinder », and Tanngrisnir, the « teeth-barer », that pull the chariot in which he rides. Thor can eat them when he is hungry and, when he wants to travel again, he has only to bless the goats skins with his hammer so that they are brought back to life. However, bones must not have been broken.
The fake contests of Utgard-Loki
Once, accompanied by Loki, Thor meets Utgard-Loki, in the fort of Utgard. The Giant calls Thor a weak God and challenges him : Thor wrestles with Elli who is Old Age personified, tries to lift Jörmungand appearing as a cat and finally tries to empty a drinking horn connected to the sea. In spite of the magic used by the Giants’ king, Thor gets out off the trap honorably and leaves Utgard for ever.
The theft of Mjöllnir
The Giants are the sworn enemies of Thor. One morning, on waking, Thor notices that his hammer has been stolen. The culprit is Thrym, a Giant king, who says that he has hidden Mjöllnir eight leagues beneath the earth, from which it will be retrieved, but only if Freyja is brought to him as his wife.Freyja, indignant and angry, goes into a rage and refuses. Thor disguises then as bride and, accompanied by Loki, appears at the wedding reception. In spite of some doubts, quickly dissipated by Loki, the Giant is duped and makes the Giants bring out the hammer Mjöllnir to « sanctify the bride ». Thor laughs internally when he sees the hammer, takes hold of it, strikes Thrym, beats all of the Giants, and so gets his hammer back.
During the events of Ragnarök, Thor fierce battles with Jörmungand. However, he will not survive the fight. He can make only nine steps before succumbing to the poison of the serpent of Midgard.
